On a beautiful Saturday morning, April 23, 2022, in the Live Oak neighborhood, the community celebrated Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay’s newest homeowners.
Volunteers, local businesses, generous donors and homeowners (who each put 500 hours of “sweat equity” into building their homes) helped make this dream come true for two families.

Located on Harper Street, this one-acre site is being developed as a mixed residential infill project for affordable housing. Four 1,400 square-foot homes have been built with seven more homes to complete this neighborhood. Four of the homeowners in this Habitat neighborhood are grade schoolteachers throughout our local schools.
"As a single mom, I never dreamed that I could have the security of owning a family home, and the opportunity to learn how to build it, under the direction of Habitat’s skilled construction staff and dedicated volunteers."
Sarah S. - elementary school teacher, single mother of three.
This project has been financed in part through partnerships with the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, donations from individuals, gifts-in-kind from corporate partners, and an award from the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The homes are restricted to families earning between 50-80% of the area median income. Each prospective owner must meet income, citizenship, and housing requirements. Two of the homes are ADA-compliant, providing homes for those with a permanent physical or mental disability.
Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County is an independent locally operated and funded affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Our mission is to build affordable, decent homes and provide home ownership opportunities to qualified families who live and work in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
